Why Passive Houses ?

By 2016 new houses are required to be ‘zero-carbon’. The government’s Code for Sustainable Homes [CSH], published in 2006, set the official road map to this target.

Whilst many are scrabbling around trying to develop the designs and technologies to achieve the ‘Code’ standards, the AECB and others have been pursuing the proven German ‘’PassivHaus’ standard.

What is PassivHaus ?

Developed twenty years ago and refined methodically since,  the standard is based on the principles of robust design of building fabric to:

  1. maximise passive solar gain +

  2. minimise over-heating

  3. maximise insulation +

  4. minimise air leakage

  5. minimise heating requirements

The chart below provides one simple comparison of ‘Passivhaus’ with other current standards.

Wye Green Homes ?

The future of house building will be green.

A group of architects and developers based around Monmouth have decided to set a new standard in speculative houses, designed to be exceptionally:

  1. energy efficient

  2. well designed

  3. robustly built

  4. commercially competitive

WyeGreenHomes‘ business plan envisages

growth to only  a handful of annual completions, believing not only that ‘small is beautiful’ but that we will be pioneers, helping to develop the model which the wider industry will then adopt.

WyeGreenHomes will not aim solely for  maximum developer profits, but a viable, robust return on ethical investment.
